My computer is really slow. How can I fix this?

I get frustrated whenever I use this computer. It keeps freezing. For example, when I type, I have to wait for the words to show up and that is so annoying! It is also very slow. How can I at least stop it from freezing every 5 seconds? I HAD TO WAIT LIKE 3 MINUTES JUST TO TYPE THIS BECAUSE IT KEPT FREEZING WHILE I WAS TYPING.!My computer is really slow. How can I fix this?

Log on as an Administrator.





First delete/un-install all programs/applications/games you no longer use (especially those you have disks for).





Burn/copy to CD/DVD/flash drive any and all music/pictures/movie files and delete the originals.





Download install and run Ccleaner, both 'Registry' and 'Cleaner' parts...

Run Disk Cleanup (Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories) check/tick all boxes, they're all safe to remove.





Run Disk Defragmenter (Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories).


Re-start.





Click Start%26gt;Run and type ';msconfig'; (without quotes '; ';),click the Startup tab and uncheck anything that's not needed at startup.





Go to this site to check which services can be safely stopped/removed...

Check for system file corruption...





You might need to get hold of an install disk for your operating system (XP/Vista/Win 7), borrow one if possible, and boot with that (any one will do as long as it's the same version eg:Home/Pro/Basic/Premium etc.).





Note: To boot from your Windows CD/DVD, the BIOS settings on your computer must be configured to do this. On start up keep tapping either F1, F2, F10, (Be Aware that some manufacturers use F10 for system recovery!) Esc, or Del, to enter the BIOS set-up. Look for ';Drive configuration';, ';Boot order'; or similar and make the CD/DVD drive the first boot device. Save settings and exit.





Start your computer from the Windows CD/DVD. To do this, insert the Windows CD/DVD into your CD/DVD drive, and then restart your computer.


When you see the ';Press any key to boot from CD'; message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows CD/DVD.








Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD/DVD drive if you are prompted.


When the ';Welcome to Setup'; screen appears, press 'R' to start the Recovery Console.





If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.





When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If you don't know the administrator password, there probably isn't one so just press ENTER.


At the command prompt (C:\%26gt;), type





chkdsk /r





(note the space between chkdsk and /r)


and press Return/Enter.


When the scan finishes, re-start.





Run Malware scans...





Download, (if you can't get on-line, have a friend download and copy to disc/flash for transfer) install, update and run full scans, in SAFE MODE*, with these programs...

Then re-start.





If you can't run a scan, go into the scanner's folder and re-name the .exe file to something like 'MyFile.exe' and try in safe mode again. Some malware prevent the execution of anti spy/mal/virus scans by blocking them by name.





You should consider getting a good Anti-Virus program.

Whoa. The one guy gave alot of info like he just copy and pasted. Anyways, how much RAM does your computer have? Maybe too many things are running which could slow down your pc significantly. There are so many reasons your pc is slow. Could you please post your specs? So that we know if your system processor, OS, RAM is the problem. Also would help Yahoo members answer easier when its narrowed down.
