How can I speed up my computer? It is a 2005 Windows XP, with 512 MB RAM, and an Intel processor.?

I want to do some video editing, but I know for a fact that my computer is too slow. Any suggestions on what to do, and keeping everything in a low budget? How can I speed up my computer? It is a 2005 Windows XP, with 512 MB RAM, and an Intel processor.?
Learning the motherboard is the first thing to do when upgrading. Once you find out what your motherboard can accommodate, then you can start upgrading.

First is learn what kind of Memory slot it has, the speed and maximum capacity. upgrading memory boost up your system speed

Next is the processor. Check what slot it has. Then check what is the best cpu speed for that slot.

I do not actually recommend upgrading old systems because it usually cost almost the same as buying a new one. There is alot of systems out there you can buy for less than $400 that will still work alot better than your upgraded system. How can I speed up my computer? Upgrade the RAM.
get a cheap flash drive, go to you tube and check out how to use a flash drive as extra RAM.

You could also buy compatible RAM on newegg.com for a decent price
Depends on your CPU and motherboard really.. But upgrading your RAM would be a start. Remember to not mix the RAM together unless they are of the exact same type.

You could also try to clean your PC, with for example Ccleaner or System Mechanic (recommended! fixes everything), this can make your RAM work better and your PC will be performing better.

Video editing is something you need a good graphic card for, so make sure you got that.
If you are tech savvy person with money then you can upgrade the hardware such as Ram (very Cheap now days) replace Processor and Graphic card.

If you are not tech savvy and cheapo then you can try to organize your computer so it runs faster.

2) run clean disk. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312

3) Delete or organize all the desktop icons in a folder.

4) Use Ccleaner to clean out junk and disable nonessential startup programs. http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=mncol

5) uninstall all the programs you don't use. (NEVER uninstall something that you don't know -it could be something essential so do your research)

6) disable all the toolbars such as (Yahoo or google or whatever)

7) use Microsoft security essential. (DO NOT USE NORTON) and uninstall any previous user antivirus. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

OR

Start fresh by reinstalling you OS again.

OR

you can just think that your computer is fast. (Placebo effect)
